Ventilation is the best means to get rid of a new carpet smell. Volatile in this case means that they evaporate at room temperature. If you have doors or windows with screens keep them open as often as possible. Volatile simply means it evaporates readily at normal temperatures.

Generally the new carpet odor is the off gassing of 4 pc which is found in the latex backing of 95 of commercial carpeting. Volatile in this case means they evaporate at room temperature.
